Again, why?

Post 2 of 2

Why do I take the photos that I do? Well, here are a few more shots along with a bit about why I took it and maybe some stuff about how as well.

Delicate

I wanted a very soft, ethereal feel to the finished image. I had Ewelina sit on a cushion on the floor, cross legged, then arranged white satin and organza around her. I used a single beauty dish almost straight overhead and shot almost straight down onto her while standing on a chair.

Dad

This was not going to be easy: two subjects, neither of whom like having their picture taken! So, I came up with the idea of them hugging and it worked perfectly: exactly what I wanted. The subjects are quite different from what I normally shoot but the intent is the same: impact and emotion.

Ewelina again. She has this ability to fix you with a gaze which never wavers. This was a very quick shoot for me, barely an hour. A single beauty dish to light her and BANG this happened. I had the camera, as I often do, set to a monochrome picture style, so I saw the shot immediately, knew it had worked and we moved on to the next set.

I wanted to capture some mystery in this shot with Alex, actually one of dozens on this shoot, all quite similar. I used just a single light, again a small beauty dish with a grid to really limit the light throw but placed quite close in to give a soft light. In this way I could light only certain features, leaving others almost but not quite unseen. The fishnet tights added to the image by breaking up otherwise rather unexciting, photographically, legs.

I wanted to do a series of close-ups using fishnet tights. Seeing some other images, I loved the way that the lines within the tights would curve around the curves of the wearer’s legs and how the patterns in the tights themselves change as the material stretched differently. This, apart from boosting contrast, is almost straight out of camera. I deliberately composed to get the three triangles, centre bottom and the top two corners positioned and with slightly different shapes.

We were coming to the end of a brief shoot and, as usual, Ewelina was smiling and laughing between poses but I wanted to capture those smiles and laughs and a bit of silliness. Obligingly, she ‘hid’ behind her hair and gave such a cheeky little grin!

This last image, above, kind of sums up my photography: it is purely fun. Yes, even the really dark, moody images are actually from shoots filled with laughter. Not even the best models can keep up a moody laugh for long before they start pulling faces at you and giggling😁😆😂

Why do you take the images that you do?

Show me your images and tell me what made you take them 😀
